1978 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships

I have managed to locate the Mens and Ladies protocols from the first ever World Short Track Championships held in Solihull, England.

The winners were Jim Lynch from Australia in the men’s division and Sarah Doctor from the USA in the ladies division. (Is there anyone that can provide a short biography on Sarah and what her skating history was after this event? It is my understanding that she was only 15 years-old when she won this title).

If you look at the recently posted Australian Veteran's records, you will see that Jim Lynch remained very competetive for a long time. He also features in the 1000m semi-final video featured previously under the 1995 Australian ST Championships video post.

Harry Spragg from England was second in the men’s event and he later became a regular addition to the Australian short track scene.

Hopefully some people will find the results and times interesting.

I was there, unfortunatly, because I was representing South Africa I was not allowed to skate, something to do with Politics. The very next week we all went across to Belgium and skated a meet in Brugge, without Politics. I am now living in Canada and am still skating. Jim Lynch had what became known as the Kangaroo Hop, I eem to remember he used this to pass up on the inside. He was an amazing skater as was Harry Spragg. Harry actually fell in these champs and badly sliced open a hand, I do believe he would have gone onto become World Champ.

I think that would be a good description of Jim's technique. There is some video footage of him in an earlier post when skating in the 1995 Australian Championships in Brisbane, and his inside passing does look like a kangaroo hop.
It is unfortunate you didn't get to skate in 1978, but I would love to hear about the history of short track in South Africa if you want to email me.

Just an update on Jimmy.
It's his 60th birthday & we, (His cousins, 3 brothers & our wives) are giving him a restaurant "roast" in Wollongong today.

He is still very active & loves water skiing as well.
He is so fit we're going to try & slow him down. LOL.

Regards Warwick (Lynch)
